some fairly positive news on the u.s. economy this morning. labor department reporting a drop of 23,000 in first time weekly unemployment claims down to 369,000. the four-week average up a bit to 368,000 but folks, those levels suggest that hiring is outpacing firing. commerce department this morning reporting that durable goods orders were up 10% in september after a 13% drop in august. a large surge in aircraft orders led the way. corporate earnings driving the market. we have been on a losing streak of late. getting some help out of the tech sector. social gamers zynga the maker of farmville and others topped modest expectations. we saw zynga's revenue grow about 3% from last year to $316 million. zynga has been under a lot of fire of late. its stock value dropped 75% since its ipo last december and recently announced a couple of days ago that it's going to lay off 5% of its workforce and kill 13 of its older titles but investors liked what they had to say about earnings. their shares are now up by 14.5%. market overall doing well. we'll se

the department of homeland security says a u.s. border patrol agent was killed and another wounded in a shooting near the u.s.-mexico border in arizona. the department says the agents were involved in a shooting on duty near the town of naco this morning. the wounded agent is being airlift to the hospital. as soon as we get more information we'll pass it along. >> reporter: in vallejo, a house fire destroyed half a home and injured a firefighter. three-alarm fire. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran was the first reporter on the scene and spoke with the homeowner about some daring rescue attempts. she joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: i spoke with the two people in the house. it was a father and son. and thank goodness the smoke alarms went off. they had a second security system that called them and asked them if they were okay so they were well prepared for this fire. you want to look at this damage now. the call came in around 3:15 this morning as a brush fire and half the house was in flames when firefighters got here on scene
